Christmas Eve 2013

We decided to have our Christmas Dinner two days early because we were leaving town after Christmas and wanted to eat all the left overs before we left.  We had the missionaries and our good friends Aubry and Jason Woodbury for dinner (Aubry went into labor a day later!). We attempted to make our very first turkey! We usually do a ham but thought it was time to brave the Turkey.  We pretty much had the traditional stuff: turkey, cranberries, gravy, mashed potatoes, salad, jello, yams, stuffing, home made rolls, and banana cream pie. It was delicious! The turkey wasn't perfect--it was a little dry, but our dinner was great! We showed the boys what the "wishing bone" was on the turkey and had them each make a wish.

Traditions:
Every night by the Christmas tree we would read a section about Jesus Life, read a fun Christmas book, sing Silent Night and have family prayer. We did miss a couple nights but for the most part we stuck to our routine.  I think we all enjoyed gathering together with the Christmas Lights on having these moments together as a family. Astonishing enough--the kids actually sat down and listened and sang the song with us.  It's usually very difficult to get those boys to sit for longer than 2 minutes. For reals!

On Christmas Eve we spent the day around the fire, putting puzzles together, and getting ready for the night.  The week before we delivered our usual Miller Jam to our friends and some bread to other members in the ward.  I tried to read something about the Nativity each night leading up to Christmas.  The boys definitely learned a lot but next year I want to concentrate on adapting Christ's attributes instead of putting so much emphasis on the dates and events that took place (although those are super important to know and understand--I also feel like we could have benefited on more concentration on becoming more christlike while we were learning about his life).

We spent the night at Brandt and Lindsey Esplins house surrounded with lots of great friends.  It seems like every time we are invited to their house something crazy happens.  Last Christmas Eve as soon as the prayer concluded Reece threw up all over the floor--right next to the food table.  There have been many other "Miller Moments" at parties that have lead us to the Emergency room, benadryl, inhalers….and so forth.  I told them they had 3 rules for this party and they had to follow all of them to avoid making another scene.
Rule #1: no throwing up
Rule #2: if you have to throw up--go to a bathroom
Rule #3: refer back to rule #1.
Well, during the prayer I started hearing Tanner cough--I knew immediately it was a bad asthma cough.  I ran and grabbed him off the stairs and immediately went into the bathroom.  I quickly gave him one puff of albuteral and out came the vomit.  I was so happy it happened in the bathroom I wasn't even bothered! Maybe next year we can make it into the toilet! Always a Miller moment. My Sister-in-laws think I need to write a book about all our crazy stories--we have far to many.

On our way home from the party it was dark outside and it had snowed a couple 4-5 inches. It was truly a winter wonderland. It looked like it was just off of a movie.  Spencer was in heaven--and so were the rest of us.  The streets were filled with peace and magic was in the air.  Everything was picture perfect.  Spencer and I were feeling so blessed to have three wonderful boys to be parents to and for all the many blessings the gospel has brought into our life.  The Lord has always been by our side and we can see the hand he has played in our life--especially in helping us raise our children.  It was a special night and our hearts were filled with true happiness and gratitude for all we had.

The kids left Soy milk this year with gingerbread cookies that they had decorated for Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause.  They also left some delicious carrots for his reindeer!

Early December 2013

We had a busy and short Christmas season.  Because of Spencer's schedule we didn't get our Christmas tree until 3 weeks before Christmas. It made the season seem short which kind of made me sad.  I love stretching Christmas out as much as I can! But here are just a couple fun things we did:

1. My mom sent the boys stockings full of little toys.  For the 12 days leading up to Christmas they were able to get something small each day.  I might has used this to curve any bad behaviors happening in our home! :) I love good incentives.
 2. A couple friends suggested having the boys ring the Salvation Army bell for an hour.  We gave it a try and it was a total success.  I think the boys really felt like they were helping those in need---and believe me when I say their handsome little faces and personalities earned a whole lot of extra money during our hour of service! But my favorite part was when a lady asked what Christmas was all about--you could tell she was waiting for the Santa answer--and suddenly Benson jumped up and down and ran to a big picture of the Nativity that was on display in Hobby Lobby that was right in front of where we were ringing the bells.  He pointed to Jesus and said, "it's all about Jesus".  It made me want to cry, it was sincere and humble. The lady was touched and so was I.  He did that a number of times to other people as they walked by.  I hope to continue this tradition-- the boys were awesome sports and it was a fun evening spending time with them ringing the bells! (plus we had an indoor location which was extra lucky because I'm pretty sure it was in the single digits that night.
 3. Ugly Sweeter friend party:
So I was kind of lame and forgot to grab Spencer and I some ugly sweaters.  So last minute we decided to switch sweaters--he wore mine and I wore his! He looked rather Handsome in my sweater! It was a great party with the most wonderful friends.

Reece filled this out and I wanted to save his answers:
My name is Reece.
I am 7 years old.
My favorite color is blue.
Lego is my favorite toy.
My favorite book is Warriors.
Grandmas is my favorite place to visit.

Young Women's/ Friends

Well, this is my social life here in Minnesota.  Not all my friends were able to make Aubry's baby shower, but this is a good group of them.  My Mom came down in October and helped me put together an awesome diaper cake for Aubry (posted in October 13').  Our theme for the baby shower was "Foxy Lady baby shower".   We had yummy treats and then a basket full of small goodies for the "foxy lady" to take home.  Every soon to be mother needs a little pampering!
Top Left: Jamie Nelson, Andrea Brinton, Heidi Allen, Kristi May, Kaylene Polley, Ann Hatch
Middle: Aubry Woodbury, Amanda Rowlings
Bottom Left: Stef Wilcox, Jennifer Hull, ME!, and Lindsey Esplin
Young Women's in Excellence: Our theme was "Stand in Holy Places".  We had a wonderful night and the girls were able to show at least one of their projects they had completed during the year.  I am very blessed to serve with theses girls.  They are so strong and beautiful.  I love them all so much!

Thanksgiving 2013

Wednesday, November 27th, 2013
We had a lovely Thanksgiving dinner this year.  For the last two years Spencer's call schedule has landed him in the hospital for Thanksgiving Day.  That of course means we get two Thanksgiving dinners--one with our family and the other with friends.  Spence had the day before Thanksgiving off so we treated that as our family day.  Spencer and I cooked all day while the boys played downstairs.  We put together puzzles, watched some good family shows, and honestly I can't remember else.  But what I do remember is we had a wonderful day together as a family.  I remember Spencer and I talking about how perfect the day had went.  It was fun being in our home, cooking our own big Thanksgiving dinner and being happy and content on a winter day spending time with our awesome boys! Per tradition, we went around the table talking about all the things we are grateful for.  The boys challenged Spencer to name 100 things he was grateful for--and with ease Spencer accomplished it.  The boys thought he was pretty funny while doing so.  The boys this year were grateful for the earth, grass, trees, toys, books, grandma's, and our home.

On Thursday, Thanksgiving day, we were graciously invited to Ashley and JD Rutledges home for dinner.  Nick and Cassi Orme and Ben and Heidi Allen also joined us.  We make quite the foursome--all of our children have a good buddy in the group which makes the kids super happy.  The Rutledge Girls (or as we call them our "sisters") had a rainbow loom and let all the boys make their own bracelets which are a total craze right now in the elementary schools.  They all had a blast and played really well together.  We are lucky and blessed to have such wonderful friends!

Tanner's 2nd birthday

Happy 2nd Birthday Tanner!
November 18, 2013
I'm not sure what happened--but somehow I forgot to take a million pictures on his special day (uncharacteristic of Mom).  I wanted to throw a big party for Tanner but then Spencer made the point that he would probably be happier if we just had a family party.  Tanner doesn't love having a million people over at the house.  He also didn't get a cake because he hates cake and anything of the sort.  So we gave him his favorite dinner (the same dinner he has every night): sweet potatoes and turkey baby food, apples and chicken baby food, and cereal! I think we got some chocolate chips in there too! Then we sang him Happy Birthday and had him open his presents.  He LOVED opening his presents! You could tell he felt really special and was having a lot of fun.
We are so lucky to have Tanner in our family.  He is such a fun, entertaining, and loving kid.  He loves simple things and likes to tease.  He loves taking baths at night and then reading books with Spencer in the rocking chair.  He could read books all day long.  He's a funny eater.  He has to be distracted to eat.  So when he's hungry he will run to our play room and grab either a book or puzzle and then put it on the table.  That means it's food time! He doesn't talk a lot but he's a great communicator otherwise.  You always know what he wants and he understands everything you are saying.  He's a very bright and handsome little boy. We love you TANNER! Thanks for making our lives brighter!

Gratitude FHE

November 23, 2013 First off, look at how cute Tanner is! He's showing off his new snow boots and snow hat! I'm in love! If you squeeze the bottom part it makes his ears flap up and down.

For FHE we made a Gratitude tree. The boys had a blast and we were happy Daddy made it home in time from work to join us.  Some of the things on our list were: grass, hearts, iPhones, friends, Grandmas, books, warm house, children's laughs, trees, music, socks, toys…
And you can't forget the picture before we headed to church! The boys LOVE it when I do this.  Right  as we are hustling out the door for church I'll frantically gather them together for a quick photo! I can't help myself when they look so darn handsome.

Tanner

November 6, 2013 Tanner is hilarious! His personality is growing every day.  I love this first picture because you can see his ginormous eyelashes! Aren't they amazing? He seems to attract everyones attention lately.  I get a lot of comments about how great he looks! He's growing strong and increasing his daily food intake.  I probably look like a terrible Mother in Costco--but his favorite thing is to drink pop! So as we do our shopping in Costco he drinks a calorie loaded pop and I enjoy all the calories he is getting from it! He's not talking a whole lot, but he loves to say different animal sounds.  He thinks he's hilarious doing it too!  He has his daddy wrapped around his little finger.  He sits on the back of the sofa looking out the front window for Daddy's white Camry.  As soon as he sees him, he starts yelling "dadadadada" and runs to the garage door.  He likes to wake up with Spencer and help him get ready for the day.  He'll grab Spencers socks, belts, bring the scale into the bathroom (hilarious), and will follow him around like a little duckling.  Tanner's a darling little boy---we love him tons! Oh, the bottom picture is of him eating chocolate chips!! YEA~ another food to add to the list.

FHE: Donuts and pumpkin carving

 October 29th, 2013
This past summer Grandma Byer's introduced us to dairy-free donuts.  She couldn't believe Reece had never eaten a donut and so she went through the extra effort to find a recipe he could have.  Turns out the recipe is amazing so we made them for Halloween! Then we carved pumpkins.

Halloween night

The boys wanted to be zombies from the game "Plants vs Zoombies".  Reece is Snorkel Zombie and Benson is Balloonie Zombie.  Thanks to Minnesota weather--it was super cold outside so they wore their snow outfits to trick or treat in.  Their real halloween costumes were worn during the Ward Halloween party.

6th Annual Halloween kid party

October 25, 2013
This year we had a "Late-Night Halloween party".  The kids came in their pajamas and stayed from 6:30-9:30pm.  We started out dividing the boys into two groups: Reece with his friends upstairs and Benson with his buddies downstairs.  Then we switched.  Upstairs they ate food and drew monsters by playing a dice game and downstairs they played bowling with a pumpkin and toilet paper, ring around the witch hat, & where's Frank?.  Then we had a contest between the groups to see who could make the best mummy--Bensons and his friends won! After throwing the mummy wrappings everywhere we settled downstairs and watched The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.  The kids had a blast and thought it was extra cool staying up late with their buddies.
Reece's buddies: Adam, Ethan, and Ben.
Benson: Max, Carson, and Chase
